making friends and Suzy's WIWM

So I've noticed that some bloggers are doing this WIWW thing..."What I Wore Wednesday" to show off their cute style. Don't worry, I'm not trying to do that. But Suzy decided she would show you her WIWM..."What I wore Monday" to prove that a true diva can in fact wear brown with black shoes, and that it all goes with navy too. Who said these colors clashed? You just got to know how to work it!

Suzy also wanted to share some pictures of some of her new friends...she really likes making new friends, as long as Mami and Papi are around too. She's not so keen on the nursery at church yet, even though her bff Pacita is always there. She likes to know we're in the same room. And she seems to like hanging out with older kids. She and Pacita are so close in age that sometimes their hanging out times turn into I-want-whatever-toy-you-have-right-now-even-though-I-haven't-paid-it-any-attention-in-6-months times for both of them. I really like our little neighborhood because every afternoon, when it isn't raining, we can go play in the street (literally) with the other neighborhood kids. Here's one of her friends from the neighborhood, Diego....gotta watch out for this little ladies man! He likes to walk her home after playing at the park:This is another random little girl Suzy met at the park on Sunday and became immediate friends with:

Here's another new friend that came over Sunday night:
And I'll share this little "wipey" dance party with you in case if you missed it on facebook....Suzy and Elvis were looking for the wipes and broke into a spontaneous dance:

sliding, swinging, kicking, and tumbling

The rest of Mom and Dad's visit consisted of lots of playing and lots of eating. Elvis's mom made us yummy homemade pupusas one night, and mom and dad made sure that Suzy got spoiled as much as possible =) While Elvis and i were at work one day, they took her to get donuts for the first time at Mister Donut. You see, since Independence Day is in September, Mister Donut celebrates each year by offering buy-one-get-one-free donuts. People go nuts. You would think that they were offering buy-one-donut-get-a-million-dollars. People line up for hours, the whole month of September just to get their 2 for 1 donuts. But the thing is that their normally only about 80 cents, so the savings isn't that big of a deal, but it's the best publicity ever and people (myself included) literally start craving donuts starting about the last week of August even though I would never think of buying one any other time of the year. Anyway, all that to say that there is a continual line at Mister Donut during the month of September, but mom and dad decided to brave the line one day with Suzy. They tell me that as soon as they walked in and asked Suzy which donut she wanted of the hundreds that were displayed, her eyes lit up and she started yelling "candy! candy!" and pointing at the sprinkle-covered donut. Wait a second, how does she know what candy is if she's never eaten it before?? And how does she know that word, in english, if I've never taught her that word?? My only conclusion is that kids are born with an innate concept of candy. Anyway, mom and dad say that during the whole 30-minute wait for the donuts, Suzy was dying to eat that candy and kept the whole line entertained. All of Suzy's grandparents together for massive spoiling:

Here's a video of my little soccer player, after running non-stop for about 45 minutes. It's OK if you laugh at the wipe-out at the end of the video....I do too because I know she didn't get hurt!

Suchitoto

On Saturday, mom and dad and Suz and I picked up Elvis from work and headed on to a little colonial town named Suchitoto, cobble-stone streets and all. It actually used to be the capital city back in the day. It has a big, lovely lake, but it started pouring down rain as soon as we got to the lake, so no pictures of the lake. You'll see that Suzy fell asleep in her stroller, she was so worn out. This may seem not so interesting, but it was the first time in her entire life that she fell asleep in her stroller! She takes awesome naps, but only when she is in her room in her crib with the lights off. If we're out and about, you can usually forget about it...she's way more interested in checking out what's going on around her. That's why I had to document her sleeping in her stroller, and her sleeping in the hammock at the beach!

The picture you see above was painted on the walls outside of a large majority of the houses in Suchitoto...it says, " In this house we want a life free of violence towards women." Each family that has decided to stand up against violence has painted this on the outside of their homes. I love that!

just a few more beach pictures...

So I had to take mom and dad to the airport this morning....not fun. But i am so thankful for their week here with us and for the opportunity for them to love on our little girl in personal for a few days and not just on skype. They're taking home with them a lot of funny Suzy sayings such as "More Papi getcha!" which is a hide-and-seek tag game, and funny memories, such as our Latin dance aerobics class with a spandex-loving, shimmying male instructor. Thanks Mom and Dad for everything!!

Nana and Granddaddy are here!

Nana and Granddaddy are here!!!!!!!!! I will be dedicating the next few blogs to their visit which is short (just one week) but has been so, so fun so far. Suzy has astounded me with a huge language burst this week in particular...i think being around other english speakers has caused all these words and phrases that she had tucked away in her brain to come out of her mouth. And then when Elvis's mom came over last night, she busted out the spanish and was entertaining both crowds! It's fun to actually be able to have a conversation with her now and for her to be able to clearly communicate what she wants, what hurts, when she wants to go potty, etc. Last night she was in the tub and told us she wanted to use the potty, successfully peed in the pot, even used toilet paper (who taught her that?!), and was so excited about our congratulatory pee-pee dance that she clapped and shouted "More dances!!" I'm so glad that mom and dad have had this opportunity to be with her in such a fun stage of learning.

For our first full day together, we took off to our favorite spot at the beach since it was Independence Day and nobody had to work. The road was washed out by the waves for part of the way (only in El Salvador), but we made it finally and got a 50% off coupon for our next trip to that hotel due to the inconvenience....anybody wanna come visit? ;-)

What trip would be complete without a visit to our new favorite gelato shop?More to come!

earrings and a giveaway you should know about.

I love earrings, and i've recently gotten back into making earrings to sell to my friends and co-workers. It's been a fun way to relax during naptime now that i'm in between grad school semesters and a way to make a few bucks (literally, just a few...i sell them cheap!)

I just saw this giveaway on a fun blog where you can win a $50 gift certificate from this amazing Etsy shop that i had never seen before! They sell all kinds of seriously cute earring paraphernalia and i would really love to win that gift certificate so i can make cute earrings and then maybe give them to you for your bday! See how this is a win-win situation?

here's the blog that has the giveaway: http://www.sadalewis.com/2011/09/giveaway-pretty-lovelies-etsy-shop.html?showComment=1315933326381#c5838588083214372091

real-life intercultural studies

The master's degree I am working on right now through Fuller Seminary is called "Intercultural Studies". I have loved all my classes so far, and the best part is that I feel like my whole life turns into one big intercultural studies project as Elvis and I mesh our different cultures and traditions and language and food. The spanglish thrown around our home and our Salvadoran/American style of life is a unique combination that I wouldn't change for the world! For example, Suzy wanted a bowl of grits last night for dinner (grits, cous-cous, corn on the cob, and cauliflower are her absolute faves at the moment) and then she ate a whole bowl full of guacamole. Grits and guacamole? Sure, why not? I love that she is a perfect mix of Salvadoran and southern. She says "ant" with the strongest southern accent "ain't", and then says "vaya pues" like any good Salvadoran would. I love it.

We are so used to our bi-cultural home and lifestyle, but we really had an intercultural experience last week, throwing in Taiwanese culture to the mix! There is a surprisingly large Taiwanese population here in El Salvador, and one really sweet family that lives just down the road. We walk over to their house several times a week to buy Taiwanese cookies and wantans, which Suzy loves. Their daughter, Wanchen, has become a good friend of mine and she comes over to the house regularly to practice her english. Last week, they invited our family over for lunch, and it was such a fun experience! For the first time in a long time, Elvis and I were in a new cultural setting in which neither one of us knew what the customs were or what were the polite things to do or not to do. If we are in the US, I can help Elvis with those cultural details, and in El Salvador, he helps me. But now both of us were in a new learning position! I really appreciated that Wanchen would explain to us their traditional way of doing things (putting on slippers before entering the house, praying for the meal, etc) and would tell us we could do it too if we would like to. They served us a yummy chow-mein dish and tempura plantains....it is fun to see how their traditional foods have been influenced by Salvadoran culture too- plantains were new to them in El Salvador. The most interesting thing was that we communicated in Spanish because it was the only language the majority could speak. Wanchen's mom does not speak Spanish, so they translated everything for her. Suzy loved playing with her mom even though they could not communicate, and she picked up a few chinese words. We have loved sharing with their family, exchanging little gifts every time we see each other (including some fish...Suzy's first pets!), and learning from their hospitality and inspiring perspective on life. Here is a picture of Wanchen and Suzy and I last night:

We're counting down the days until mom and dad get here....just one week away!!!!!!!!!!!
